The term nursing home is often used as a catch-all phrase to describe many different types of senior housing including assisted living. Although it's similar to assisted living, nursing homes offer a very specific level of care that you won't find in assisted living.

Today we're going to talk about the differences between those two types of care including one very important difference that I think you should know about. we will talk about nursing homes and assisted living and the differences between these two types of care.

And we cover the differences between assisted living centers and assisted living homes and also cover the most important things to know when looking for assisted living.

We'll give a quick recap of assisted living

In assisted living, you receive care from certified caregivers and not from nurses. Now there are a few exceptions to that especially in assisted living homes where the owner or manager may come from a nursing background, but by and large you're going to be receiving care from certified caregivers and not from nurses.

In assisted living, residents live Semi-independently and may need help with one or more activities of daily living which is ideal for someone who's in good health but may need more help in the near future. They don't need consistent access to medical care, but may need it every once in a while.

Assisted living is also ideal for someone who wants to stay active and social and live in a community among people their own age. Residents either live in shared rooms or private rooms in assisted living homes or in private apartments with kitchenettes in assisted living centers now.

Let's talk a little bit about nursing homes

There are also called skilled nursing facilities and the care you receive is provided by trained nurses. They have the ability to provide a wide variety of treatments and care in a nursing home a resident generally can't live independently and has ongoing medical conditions they need treatment for they often also need 24-hour supervision.

Someone may be a good candidate for a nursing home if they have trouble with mobility. Residents typically need extensive care like rehabilitation from an injury or a fall or palliative care in a nursing home. You either have a shared room or a private room and it's most similar to what you'd find in a hospital setting. That's so nurses can provide a wide variety of care for residents.

Those are some of the main differences between assisted living and nursing homes. But I think the most important difference between these two types of senior housing is the cost.

The median cost of assisted living is about half of what the cost of nursing home is depending on the facility and the room type because there's such a significant difference in costs between Assisted living and nursing homes. You should do an assessment of the level of care needed by you or a loved one before deciding on an option.

If you don't end up needing the level of care provided by nursing homes, you can save money by opting for assisted living, However, if you do need the level of care provided by nursing homes, You'll save yourself in the long run by getting the level of care that you need right away.
